jesse Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 I'm hoping some of the more talented folks on this forum can help with the translation on the saya of a sword I just purchased. Thanks in advance, Jesse Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 The attribution is to : Yamashiro (no) kuni Rai Minamoto Kunimitsu Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 Kagen period (1303) (ke?) Mitsushige - 家光重 I am guessing this refers to an owner name or family treasure (ju-dai) Quote
jesse Posted December 8, 2022 Author Report Posted December 8, 2022 As I said in my post above, someone with a great deal more knowledge was needed and, here comes Ray. Many thanks Ray, I appreciate your time and brain. Warm Regards, Jesse 1 Quote
SteveM Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 For the lower part I would say 来光重 Rai Mitsushige - but I don't know how to interpret given the top part says Kunimitsu. Maybe the sayagaki writer's way of padding his attribution? (I'm guessing the sword is mumei). 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 That makes more sense @SteveM. It is strange to have a second attribution (appears to be written in the same hand, at the same time) which is somewhat at odds with the first attribution. As you said though, it does appear to clearly be Rai Mitsushige. Quote
jesse Posted December 14, 2022 Author Report Posted December 14, 2022 Thank you Steve and Ray for the additional insight. Much appreciated. Quote
