John C Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 Hello: In researching a recently acquired NBTHK origami, I have noticed a lack of information on what (or who) is contained on the back side. There is a ton of information about what is on the front, however scant information at best about the back. I believe I have translated the information correctly, however I do not know how it pertains to the sword. I believe the top section translates to Miura Makoto and the bottom section translates to Issued August 27th 2010. Is Miura Makoto a person? If so, how does he relate to the sword? The date of issue is different than what is hole-punched on the front side (May of 2010). What do different issue dates mean? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Regards, John C. (I have included the front side just for reference). Quote
Katsujinken Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 Usually the person on the back is the person who submitted the sword. It could be the owner or an agent. Sometimes it will be removed or covered up for privacy later. My Juyo Naoe Shizu was submitted by Saito Mitsuoki (Hisashi’s father), of Ginza Seikodo, back in 1979-80. Good question about the two dates! Quote
Nobody Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 The dates on the paper are 1. Hole-punched – 22201005 (Heisei 22, 2010/05) 2. Front side - 平成二十二年七月二日 (July 2, 2010) 3. Back side - 平成二十二年八月二十七日 (August 27, 2010) As for the dates, I understand as follows, 1. The date means the year and month when the sword was accepted for examination. 2. The date of judgment 3. The actual date when the paper was issued 2 Quote
NewB Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 So if I may ask - where is the private information about any person involved in the submission located as far as front and back?? Could someone please circle it? I'd appreciate it very much Cheers John Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 For the record, I heard that a few years back now, after repeated complaints and debate, the NBTHK stopped adding owners' names to the paperwork. (Happy to be proved wrong on this.) 1 Quote
John C Posted December 8, 2022 Author Report Posted December 8, 2022 Thank you for the replies. I wasn't sure if the name on the back was supposed to be the swordsmith or just the owner or agent. Essentially, I can disregard it, which may explain why there is so little information about the back side. Now the different dates make sense...thank you! John C. Quote
george trotter Posted December 8, 2022 Report Posted December 8, 2022 Hi John, I met Miura Makoto in Australia in 2013. He was visiting a fellow sword collector here and had a look through my collection of swords. What I can tell you is that he was a dealer, appraiser, collector and was based in Yokohama (not sure if he had a shop, but was definitely in the sword trade). He was a member of the NTHK and NPO. I would think that your paper was one he submitted for shinsa for the purpose of on-selling - but it is also possible he is deceased now and this was one of his personal swords later on-sold. Just don't know. Hope this helps. 1 Quote
