you are correct that it looks a bit Japanese, but I have never seen a knife like this in connection with Japanese knife making. You cannot be sure that the polish is a true HADORI or just a decorative KESHO polish.

Where is this located? Koshirae looks relatively "new" to me. I see no reason why it wouldn't be Japanese? I have seen some "interesting" looking bladed items come out of Japan.

If that first item has hada and is traditionally forged, then I am a fan of it!

 

From what I can see, it appears to at least have some activity.

Just like knifemakers everywhere, the Japanese smiths must have occasionally played around and experimented just for fun. I can imagine a smith, having seen a machete, deciding to make one similar and do it better. There must be thousands of one-offs out there. Interesting piece, whatever it is. Don't think it's too old.
