SwordGuyJoe Posted June 13, 2009 Report Posted June 13, 2009 I came across this on eBay and it is a first for me. The sword seems to be Chinese junk, but it is, "Papered". Doesn't look like NTHK or NBTHK to me - although the picture of the old guy and the thumb print is a very nice touch... http://cgi.ebay.com/Japanese-sword-sign ... 7C294%3A50 Is this a new thing or has this been around for a while and I just missed it? hybridfiat Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Just another example of the need for a site like this one to educate and advise. Caveat emptor and why ebay should be avoided if at all possible. Quote
Stephen Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Quote ebay should be avoided if at all possible. lots of members sell and buy on ebay, learn swords, then sellers, its not such a bad thing. Quote
Brett Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Correction: "Lots of members sell and buy on ebay, learn swords, then sellers, its not such a bad thing [if you know what you are doing]" ... Thanks, -Brett Quote
IanB Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Nice touch that. Offer junk with a bit of paper run off on a computer as proof its a .....What? Ian B Quote
Grey Doffin Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Ian, it is proof of exceptional versatility. Should you be walking through the dark woods and you're attacked by a brigand or 2, you have the sword to protect you. What's more, on that same stroll through the dark woods, if nature calls, you have paper. Grey Quote
Mantis dude Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 I saw that to, it is sad. Well it is going to be those guys that don't really know even the most basics that are really going to pay. Knowledge has value obviously. The few times I have gone to a military show, I am amazed at the garbage I hear by the "dealers". "if a sword isn't signed, it isn't valuable". It was hard for me to tell them that even if it is signed it is likely a fake signature anyway. lol. Fake papers, etc will just be more ammunition for the uniformed. It is hard to tell these military show guys much, how do you teach nihonto 101 in 5 minutes? Half the guys are so cynical they think you are lying to them to rip them off anyway. For some reason they seem to believe the bad information. So even when you have good intentions, you can't win. I guess if you can inform just one guy about the truth of a piece, you did your part. With even WWII machine blades selling for a few hundred+ there is just too much money to rob people. And for real collectors, well even more reason to stay on your toes and don't take anything for granted. Quote
raven2 Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Well, Ken, Look on the bright side. If the dealers want to tell you "if a sword isn't signed, it isn't valuable" then you should be able to pick up some nice mumei swords at good prices. Seriously, though, it just seems to be more of an escalation of trying to fleece people as miuch as possible. Quote
Hermes Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 There is junk made in China every day on Ebay by the 100's if not 1,000's, no need to pay it any special attention, look at JOKE with it's 1001 pictures no less! http://cgi.ebay.com/Japanese-SAMURAI-SW ... 1|294%3A50 Quote
hybridfiat Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 A member of "Square Traders" we surely can trust this muppet eh?! Shows what value this little bit of ebay spin has Quote
raven2 Posted June 14, 2009 Report Posted June 14, 2009 Right, and you can buy it now for only $ 47,777 and they don't have any worries because as they say, they don't claim to be experts on Nihonto. Quote

moss Posted June 15, 2009 Report Posted June 15, 2009 Shame that it isn't the four wheel drive version ! Still the price does reflect the mono drive model.   Moss Quote
Rich T Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 Interesting to note that the document was provided by a Martial Arts group by the looks, and it has no image of the sword at all on it, so does it relate to the sword as in being an authentic item ? Just curious Rich Quote
Nobody Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 The paper itself is a crude fake with a lot of nonsense. That does not seem to be made by a native Japanese speaker. Quote
benkyoka Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 Also interesting, every blade that seller has sold has had the same signature. Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted June 16, 2009 Author Report Posted June 16, 2009 So the swordsmith was busy. What are you trying to imply? Quote
Amon Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 I have seen these blades before (and the papers with them). Chinese made blades from Lonquan or something like that. Quality level like Quote

Stephen Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 i still cant understand why this thread is getting so much time, not nihonto, we all know the crap is out there, why are we talking about it here? Quote
Guido Posted June 17, 2009 Report Posted June 17, 2009 Amen to that, Stephen, I was about to post a similar question! Quote
