Two sellers in two different cities in Japan selling two guards at the same time that are almost identical except for tiny details that show they are not the same pieces. What are the chances?

Also you might notice the "fundo" synchronicity with the sukashi guard and the other guard. ["fundo" is easier to see on the left example]

The chances for what Dale?

All that tosogu and tsuba stuff is not unique. Every piece was made hundreds of times.

Those are cheap mass produced tsuba for poor ashigaru.

Yes Chris they are cheap and nasty - but how is it they turn up at the same time- why not weeks apart or even years? I have seen plenty of single tsuba turning up at once but not two from two sellers - the fundo element is also a strange coincidence. JMO

Barry,

I will try!

Coincidence means that similar things occur accidentally at the same point of time, by chance. So similar TSUBA could have been made in a neighbouring time-frame (this was certainly done in TSUBA schools and is no coincidence) and appear on today's market at the same time.

Synchronicity is a term that describes two (or more) things or events that happen or develop exactly at the same time, but most often deliberately. As there is CHRONOS (Greek for time) involved, it must have to do with the (intended) point of time.

Yesterday, at our sword club meeting, another collector and I put out mokume tsuba. One tsuba that he had was basically the same as my tsuba. The only significant difference was that mine was signed and his was not. Synchronicity???

Hey Jean, did you notice the synchronicity of the replies on the other thread "Picked up a new tsuba, need some advice." These were posted within milliseconds of each other from opposite sides of the planet.   The old saying "Great minds think alike and so do yours and mine!"
