knd643 Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 Saw a Type 95 nco sword w/ scabbard and the scabbards serial number is the exact same serial number as the sword but is missing the last number. I can't tell if its a light/misstrike or if its just not there at all. User said you could see the number faintly in person, but very faintly. Was wondering if light/misstrikes were common to see on Type 95s. I would assume its a light/misstrike on this scabbard since it seems like it would be pretty difficult to obtain a scabbard with the serial number being exactly like the sword but being just 1 digit short. Thanks. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 Colin, Mis-strikes were often seen in all stamping, whether numbers or inspection stamps. They are not the norm, but there are enough of them around. Pics would help. Seems to me that they were more common in the late-war 95s. I've seen some serial numbers almost unreadable on them: Quote
knd643 Posted November 26, 2022 Author Report Posted November 26, 2022 Here's some pics of the sword. Contemplating picking this one up. Everything looks good to me from the little knowledge I have lol. From what I have been informed it is a Early War Tokyo Suya. As you can see the serial number on the blade is 41423 and on the scabbard it is 4142. I assume its almost impossible for a collector/faker/soldier in field to find the scabbard that has the exact same numbers as the sword but is missing only the last digit. Thank you for the help you have given me in the little time I have been on this forum. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 If you ask me, the three is probably under paint. That’s a legit Sword, it would be happy to have a new owner! 1 Quote
Shamsy Posted November 26, 2022 Report Posted November 26, 2022 Seeing mis-struck stamps and mistakes is always an enjoyable phenomenon. Nothing much to add to what Bruce has already said. Not common, but plenty of examples across all 95 patterns. Examples may be: Stamps in wrong order Numbers stamped horizontally Subcontractor stamped twice Half stamps Over-struck mistakes Stamps upside-down Particularly prevalent are weak strikes on iron fuchi and the pattern 5 '3' stamp being badly mashed. 1 Quote
knd643 Posted November 26, 2022 Author Report Posted November 26, 2022 Thanks for the info guys. Wanted to make sure everything was in order before purchasing it. I figured the scabbard was matching to the sword and the 3 is just under the paint like Bruce said or a light strike. Thanks again. Quote
