A bit of assistance re this Tsuba paperwork if I may

G'Day all, a few years back I picked up a rather large Tsuba and included paperwork. I filed the paperwork assuming it was just something prepared by the seller and of no value.

Having trouble with the English language let alone Japanese, I'm wondering if the group are able to add some information on the paperwork. Does it mean anything ?

All the very best and many thanks

Hello Chris,

This paper is from the slightly obscure Nihon Tōsōgu Kenkyū-kai (Japan Sword Fittings Research Association), which if memory serves is an organization that is either made up of dealers centered around Ōsaka, or is somehow affiliated with a particular dealer in that region. In any event, they don't seem to be recognized as an authority either inside or outside of Japan. This isn't to say the people who wrote that paper don't know what they are talking about, its just that they seem to have a commercial interest behind their appraisals so...there is that.

Nihon Tōsōgu Kenkyū-kai  (Japan Sword Fittings Research Association).

Mountain View.
Mumei (unsigned)
Attributed to Ichiguchi (bridle-maker). Mid Edo.

The Ichiguchi were a school/group of ironworkers who apparently specialized in horse bridles, and then branched out to tsuba-making.

Chris [Vajo], You might be on to something there- the paper has an image printed on it rather than most papered items having a separate photo glued to the paper with a seal over the edges. The paper could be something akin to a photocopy? [or at least a cheaper format] JMO.  - of course the images may have been slightly out of focus as well. :)

Thank you all very much for your input, to tell the truth, I hadn't noticed the out of focus picture, and it could well be a photocopy.

Steve I really appreciate your summery, many thanks.

Regards and best
