Swords Posted November 10, 2022 Report Posted November 10, 2022 I know I Hav listed swords on here frequently but if you don’t mind I’m kinda confused about this sword !ts a dealer from Japan Maybe I’m delusional but I hav been looking for a nice WW2 Japanese navy sword a traditional however it states was made with Tamahagane ?? Unless I’m not seeing this It looks more like stainless??? So just some help would be appreciated Probably a waste of time! This is bull s**t and misperception if it isn’t what it claims and should not be listing it if that’s the case thanks Quote
Misconstrued Posted November 10, 2022 Report Posted November 10, 2022 Many navy swords were indeed made with stainless steel as they were more near water. Which is why most times the tangs don't have much patina on them compared to the swords of that period. I'm not sure if it's actually made of tamahagane. But I believe stainless steel is most certainly not tamahagane, so it probably is a misperception. 1 Quote
David Flynn Posted November 10, 2022 Report Posted November 10, 2022 You're getting better Steve. Definitely a Stainless. Quote
Ray Singer Posted November 10, 2022 Report Posted November 10, 2022 Steve, please take this as well-meaning constructive criticism. I would really suggest taking a deep dive into some good primers on the subject of Japanese swords. This will give you a foundation to decide what it is that you would like to purchase and to help understand what you are looking at when you encounter swords for sale. Having a better foundation will help you ask yourself questions like "Do I really want a mumei Showa era blade, even if it is traditionally made?" (which this one isn't). There's nothing wrong with taking six months or a year to just read books before making a purchase. It is a much better investment than buying swords you cannot sell in the future (without taking a very steep loss). 3 Quote
David Flynn Posted November 10, 2022 Report Posted November 10, 2022 Ray, I think that may be falling on deaf ears. He has been given a lot of good advice, but here we go again. Quote
Swords Posted November 10, 2022 Author Report Posted November 10, 2022 Now I’m sorry I ever bought this up I wasn’t looking for criticism just opinion but thanks Ray I am planning on reading more just haven’t had Alot of time right now I hav the of book of connoisseurs and John Slough but need more And I cannot believe a dealer in Japan who lists many swords would admit stainless is tamahagane ! should hav gone with my gut on this one Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted November 11, 2022 Report Posted November 11, 2022 Just because the dealer is from Japan doesn't mean he is a saint or an expert. Knowledge is power when collecting Japanese swords, we don't want to see you get swindled. 1 Quote
