Lee997 Posted November 2, 2022 Report Posted November 2, 2022 This has come up and although my knowledge is growing I’m not at a level I’d be confident to appraise myself. although it does look to be in good polish. https://armouryantiques.com/armoury-antiques-militaria/ref-3596-ww2-Japanese-1944-pattern-sword-detail thanks. ROKUJURO Posted November 2, 2022 Report Posted November 2, 2022 Looks like a WWII military blade signed NARI MITSU (first KANJI is doubtful). 1 Quote
Lee997 Posted November 2, 2022 Author Report Posted November 2, 2022 Thank you Jean however can you explain your statement “1st Kanji is doubtful “? the blade ( at least what I can see of it appears to be in good polish and overall condition, would you concur? Rgds Lee. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted November 3, 2022 Report Posted November 3, 2022 Lee, I am not sure that I found the correct reading of that KANJI. If you show it in the TRANSLATION section, it is more likely to be seen by the NIHONGO experts. Concerning the condition, I think I can see no rust on the blade, but the photos are small and may hide details and flaws. In the end, I think it is a machine made blade (1945, not 1944) from the end of the war, so we cannot expect a work of art. 1 Quote

Lee997 Posted November 3, 2022 Author Report Posted November 3, 2022 Many thanks, would you consider it being worth £800? As long as it has no other flaws. Lee. Quote

Bruce Pennington Posted November 3, 2022 Report Posted November 3, 2022 Lee, That's a cheap price for a contingency model officer sword, especially one with that very rare anchor mon. This gunto has been up for sale on 3 different occasions over the years, that we know of on NMB. It's been discussed on a thread HERE. I'm posting a couple of photos for when the sale link goes dead. Lee997 Posted November 3, 2022 Author Report Posted November 3, 2022 Thanks everyone but seems a case of snooze you loose! As it’s sold, only spoke to the dealer yesterday evening? I wonder if the buyer came as a result of me bringing it up on the forum ? lesson learned, my fault for posting the link I guess? Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted November 4, 2022 Report Posted November 4, 2022 Now that it has sold I do have some reservations about the Mon on this one. It is significantly larger than a normal Mon, there is virtually no patina and the placement is slightly crooked. The subject of an anchor is also very strange. 1 Quote

A guy even asked for the specific location of the antique shop I found it in. Admittedly, I didn't have the money at the time, so no harm, no foul. Quote
Infinite_Wisdumb Posted November 4, 2022 Report Posted November 4, 2022 this thread is an example of why this forum is great. Thanks @Bruce Pennington and @PNSSHOGUN 1 1 Quote
