Hello Guys

New to collecting swords.

I just bought my first katana, from a big collector guy.

Do you guys know who / were / when it was made.

I would really appreciate any info.

Thank you

/Dave

Hmmm. I'm not so sure this reminds me of a shinsakuto.
Anyone else?
Could this be a Komonjo special? (a guy who lists swords on eBay that are usually not what they seem at first)

Not possible to say from the pics given. Even the nakago jiri is different. Who the Japanese seller was also plays a part.
This stuff is flooding the market from sellers like komonjo etc. I just can't say.

The seller told me he think it was made pre ww2.

Probably before arround year 1940-45, there was many guntos for high rank officers that never see the light because it was many on stock, or the officer inself has his own family sword, etc. Dificult to know, and after the war in last showa times was mounted on a custom civil koshirae maybe, hard to know exactly it was buyed with other several swords gunto and samurai antiques in Japan

Dave,

As Brian says, impossible to say anything meaningful about the blade with these images. Where you buy a sword and who you buy it from can give you reassurance or it can set off many alarms. Apparently this came from a “big collector guy” but the story he has given you contains a lot of misleading uncertainties. To my eyes based on these images the fittings and tsuka Ito etc look brand new.
According to the info on this smith that you have found he was born in 1944 and didn’t get his licence until 1989 so what the seller told you is rubbish. He could not have made it before 1940-45….and it certainly doesn’t look that old.

The story doesn’t really stack up……but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s “bad” . It could (hopefully) be a shinsakuto (modern sword) by this smith. Has it got a date on the other side of the nakago?

Can you give this forum clear images of the detail in the kissaki, the hamon and the hada?…..then you will learn much more.

All the best.

Colin

Contact @Paul Martin (can probably find him on Facebook) and see if he has any contact details for the smith. Send him pics and ask if he made it. Or maybe find his contact details on the web.
I hope it's him, but I have my doubts. It was certainly not made by him before he was born :)

Looks like one of those komonjo blades. If I'm not mistaken it's a shinsakuto and any legit shinsakuto must be signed and dated to my understanding. The fact that it isn't dated is a red flag. The habaki and all the fittings look komonjo like.

Modern swordsmith.

I just noticed, there is one kanji missing.

The last one is missing.
