Hello from a chaotic and laughable UK….I’m guessing our political/financial adventures have reached the wider world!!!

Anyway that isn’t the topic here.
My knowledge on iron tsuba is negligible so can I please ask for your help on this one? It comes off a very nice blade that has a modest koshirae.
Anything you can tell me will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. All the best. Colin

This is the sword it comes from just out of interest-

H83.8mm

W78.2mm

T4.54mm at mimi

Kosuke-tagane [worm eaten] around the rim something a few smiths used including Nobuiye, Saotome or even Jingo amongst others. Not much help in narrowing it down. Reminds me a little of one of mine - maybe just the wide rim? Still no help as I can't put an attribution on mine! :(

Thanks Dale….those wriggly designs around the rim puzzled me …..but now they make total sense…..just like when you pull the bark off an old log and can see where the various “bugs” have eaten it.

Cant quite understand the Pauwlonia  blossom floating among clouds…..maybe symbolic of the Emperor…..the sword it came off was a type carried by Imperial loyalists of the Bakumatsu period leading up to the Meiji restoration.

Bruno, Greg…thanks for chipping in.

Anyone give me an idea re age?

All the best. Colin

Hi Colin

In a recent film we made on old iron I discussed a very similar tsuba of my own, that I labelled Higo, Kumagai.  In terms of style and details I think you'd see the similarities. That group might be worth looking at perhaps.

on my youtube channel,

Just watched it Ford. Very informative. I’m now off to take a few tsuba off a few swords and get the mag.visors out!….see what I can see. The video increased my iron tsuba knowledge exponentially every few minutes.

I’ll have a rummage around in YouTube as well….see if  I can finally find my way around it.

All the best. Thanks again. Colin
