optimus Posted October 15, 2022 Report Posted October 15, 2022 Hi guys, Could you please help med identify this tanto that arrived with the mail today. Thanks! Quote
Alex A Posted October 15, 2022 Report Posted October 15, 2022 Hello, Its a tough one, probably the end of a katana or wak, judging by the nakago You dont see Shinogi zukuri shaped tanto often. If i was to buy one it would have to be signed and nakago well finished, that way you know its a legit tanto An example https://sword-auction.com/en/product/14059/as21710-短刀:横山伊勢守祐平/ 1 1 Quote
Brian Posted October 15, 2022 Report Posted October 15, 2022 Agree. Front part of a katana or wakizashi. Awkward shape. Kozuka looks quite nice, but the blade looks modern or decorative, so the kozuka needs to be checked carefully. 1 Quote
Alex A Posted October 15, 2022 Report Posted October 15, 2022 Peter, as mentioned, very tough without having the full original sword with nakago, as that gives clues to the school. We need really good clear shots of hamon and hada to even come up with maybes Very difficult 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted October 15, 2022 Report Posted October 15, 2022 KOGATANA blade seems to be mounted in a false way; cutting edge is on the wrong side. Looks like the blade of a fruit knife. SAYA and blade have different SORI. 1 Quote
Tensho Posted October 15, 2022 Report Posted October 15, 2022 Kogatana looks like it was made from a steak knife. I owned one, looked identical to yours. Was part of a victorian era knife set in display box. Real Japanese Kozuka with different blade. Circled the part in red that they all seem to have. Won't comment on anything else other than the mekugi-ana looks "freshly" drilled. Unless I'm mistaken you can see the raised burr around the hole, even something clinging to it. 1 Quote
