Nicholas Posted October 5, 2022 Report Posted October 5, 2022 Hello all, I know this is the transition section of the board. I already have the mei figured out Bishu Osafune Norimitsu. I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on any information about this sword. It’s a kinda tired blade. Rather thin hamon. Not sure if it was made like that or due to damage and many polishes? Also interested in what era approximately this sword was made. Thank you for your time. Pics are in the link https://imgur.com/a/uxq8kIu Quote
lonely panet Posted October 5, 2022 Report Posted October 5, 2022 bishu osafune norimitsu, so it koto, most likely SUE period . a typical example of tachi from the later sengoku area. its nice that its ubu but shows a class simular to the sukesada stuff. a few ware in the steel and cousre hada its best apprecated as is. polishing would be a unrecoverable cost Quote
Nicholas Posted October 5, 2022 Author Report Posted October 5, 2022 Thanks for replying. Would this be considered kazu–uchi mono? Quote
Geraint Posted October 5, 2022 Report Posted October 5, 2022 Hmmm. It's always tricky from images especially when we don't have the shot we want, nor any dimensions which would really help here. It is generally suggested that for a Sue koto sword from Bizen then the Bishu derivative suggests kazuuchi mono, however that assumes that this is Sue koto, unusual to find tachi from this period, no? And just for added fun almost all the Norimitsu lineage from the first/second generation are known to have signed Bishu Osafune. As you say, Hamfish, it appers to be ubu so what is it? I'm afraid that Imgur is playing hard to get at the moment for me but does the mei look too new compared to the rest of the sword? If so then possibly a late blade with gimei. Or just possibly something quite a bit earlier. Nick, is there not a New York based sword society you could show this to? Let us know how it turns out. All the best. Quote
Nicholas Posted October 5, 2022 Author Report Posted October 5, 2022 Sorry I forgot about dimensions. Nagasa is 27 1/2 inches nakago is 7 inches overall length 34 1/2 inches blade is 1 1/2 inches wide at hamache and 3/4 of an inch wide at the yokote. hope that helps some. I think there’s only 1 sword society in nyc that I’m aware of. Haven’t attended any meetings yet. Quote
