katanako Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 There is an "Emura" gunto on ebay in which the signature reads MURAE SAKU. I've never come across a swordsmith misspelling his own name!!! Japanese WW2 SWORD SHIN GUNTO GENDAITO BY EMURA SIGNED BY CHOUNSAI EMURA Item number: 220420126389 Has anyone ever run across such a thing??? Either he was drunk when he or his student signed it, or it is a forgery done by a Gaijin who doesn't know kanji! It's funny...and as of now, there are 10 bids on it!!! KATANAKO Quote
Rich S Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 Very strange indeed. What is stranger is that the Kanji are carved correctly for Emura (see oshigata B on my Emura page). My "guess" is that a student carved them backwards or maybe was just really pi$$ed at the boss :-) One of the weirdest I've ever seen. Rich S Quote
Stephen Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 maybe the student was dyslexic, everything about the blade says Emura, its going to go for a good sum, kinda like if Picasso signed backwards. Quote
Brian Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 Even stranger....I seem to remember seeing this discussed on the forum a long time ago on another (or the same?) blade. I remember us discussing a "Mura-e"..anyone else remember that? Hard to search the forum for, but I'll see if I can track it down. Brian Quote
Stephen Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 I had that memory as well but thought it was just old age. Quote
bdgrange Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 Someone here once said: "if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it must be one." Looks good to me as well. Bill de Quote
pcfarrar Posted May 27, 2009 Report Posted May 27, 2009 I had that memory as well but thought it was just old age. I remember too it was a couple of years back. Emura's are really starting to command high prices these days, it wasn't so long ago that you could buy them for less than $1000. Quote
Mark Green Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Hi gang. I have seen some very good, and papered Emura blades. But, many were made by the prisoners he trained. Does that make a ww2 gendi worth 3k+. He must have been one hell of a teacher. Are his sword Tamahagane? Quote
pcfarrar Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Are his sword Tamahagane? Weren't they rumoured to have made their own Tamahagane in the prison? Quote
Mark Green Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 I heard that. But it was something like a scrap iron mix smelter. Which, likely makes some good sword making steel. I don't know for sure though. I'm sure someone here has better info than I. I have heard many modern smiths, build there own Tatara, and throw every kind of steel in there to geat a very Tamahagane like stuff, that seems to make some very good looking swords. Quote
Rich S Posted May 31, 2009 Report Posted May 31, 2009 I think (?) that is called orishigane, but memory (like most else) may be failing. Rich S Quote
