Ray Singer Posted September 30, 2022 Report Posted September 30, 2022 Hi Dan, I already replied to you on this in one of the Facebook groups I manage but it is a worthwhile investment to send a sword to Japan which you feel may be a candidate Osafune Kanemitsu. There are individuals here in the US who can give you an opinion, but if your intention is to sell the sword (as indicated on Facebook), shinsa in Japan is the best approach. It does not take the 2 years and $5,000 you quoted to send a sword for Hozon. Best regards, Ray Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 30, 2022 Report Posted September 30, 2022 Separately, I would suggest showing the entire (Hon'ami Kōson?) sayagaki vertically so that it can be seen. Only one side showed in your YouTube video, and now I can see there is more information (including an attribution) shown in the photos above. Much like it is difficult to read a sentence by viewing individuals photos of individual words, I would suggest showing the entire sayagaki in a clear vertical photo of each side. 1 Quote
ChrisW Posted September 30, 2022 Report Posted September 30, 2022 There are a few of us in Indiana and I agree with Ray on this one. The signature looks righteous and ought to be sent for shinsa. Quote
Brian Posted September 30, 2022 Report Posted September 30, 2022 Listen to Ray, he gives good advice. Quote

Mark Posted September 30, 2022 Report Posted September 30, 2022 i have seen this sword in hand. I am not a "sword expert" but been willing to spent a couple of hours helping the family. some information may have been miscommunicated somehow, i had said if they wanted to get the best paper the sword "Might" get (Juyo) would cost 5k (or more with polish) and up to 2 years. I had explained the papering process reasonably clearly, maybe i could have done better It is a nice sword. i have some serious reservations on being Bizen Kanemitsu. If i were given the sword to kantei without seeing sayagaki or the nakago i would have said Munetsugu (Bizen no suke) or Ishido. I checked the Bizen Taikan, Osafune book, and other references and the temper and hada are atypical for Kanemistu (in my opinion) The attribution was done reasonably well but with no signature of who did it i was not willing to say, based on the workmanship, that i was sure it was a correct call 2 2 Quote
Curran Posted October 2, 2022 Report Posted October 2, 2022 Thank you Mark and Raymond for handling these inquiries with the depth and honesty that you do. The amount of information you and others provide might be hard for outsiders to grok. Significant background knowledge required in this particular corner of the art world, most often given for free simply to help. 1 1 Quote
Gakusee Posted October 2, 2022 Report Posted October 2, 2022 This is a Sato Kanzan sayagaki. But there is a lot of additional transcribing. O kissaki looks promising but one cannot tell much from these photos. Quote
Nihontocollector752 Posted October 2, 2022 Report Posted October 2, 2022 Definitely worth sending for shinsa Quote

Hi Michael, I posted the Kanzan example as a reference for how to show a complete, vertical view of the sayagaki (rather than small, cropped portions of the inscription). My impression was that Dan's sayagaki might be by Kōson, but would like to see the entire saya. Best regards, Ray Quote

Of course, you are right, we should see the full sayagaki and both sides if available. Also, the blade photos need to be in higher res and closer for evaluation. Well, will be keen to hear how this develops. Quote
