Edward Mahle Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 Hello NMB members. Has anyone used Nihonto antique's for a sword restoration? If so how did the transaction go and or quality of work. Would be nice to send it out for a one stop shop restoration? Any feed back would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely Edward Quote
Geraint Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 I'm guessing this one, https://nihontoantiques.com/ Yes? All the best. 1 Quote
MarcoUdin Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 It's Moses Becerra, he isn't traditionally trained but is known to do some quality work. Guess it depends what you are wanting to polish. I doubt anybody has anything negative to say about him other than his wait list. 1 Quote

Edward Mahle Posted September 20, 2022 Author Report Posted September 20, 2022 @MarcoUdin wait time doesn't bother me, seems to be common to have some wait time for this kind of thing. Thank you for the reply. I think I'd feel more comfortable with a traditionally trained togishi. Quote

He apprenticed under traditionally trained, and I take his word on that. 1 Quote
MarcoUdin Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 He didn't do a full apprenticeship, only partial. The only fully trained togishi in the US is Mr. Hayashi. That being said, I would have no problems sending a blade to Mr. Becerra 1 Quote
Daniel Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 Judge for yourself but in my opinion Moses does good work and is a good man to deal with… Quote
Rivkin Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 The problem of nearly all non-Japanese polishers, traditionally trained or not: inconsistent level. Most are guilty of once in a while taking a blade on and for some reason not wanting to put the effort required, to an extent that its later refused papers... , taking in mind out of polish blades usually pass unless its really severe this by itself is quite an achievement. I've seen Moses work which was very good and on par (taking into account his style of polishing is rather difficult) with upper end Japanese work. I've seen lesser blades unfinished or finished in great haste with no regard for how it looks... Quote

MarcoUdin Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 I remember seeing that one, it's a beautiful blade. Congrats 1 Quote
Toryu2020 Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 I'd like to chime in - Moises has been submitting blades for himself and on behalf of his clients to the NTHK shinsa for years. The shinsa team always includes at least one polisher. He has consistently been able to bring out the characteristics of the individual swords so they may be "read" by the shinsa team and he has enjoyed a high pass rate for his submissions accordingly. I have not once heard any negative comment on his polish by the team members. I have always tried to recommend only "fully trained" polishers publicly but I am more than happy to give my endorsement to Moises and his work. -tch 1 Quote
Baba Yaga Posted September 20, 2022 Report Posted September 20, 2022 The restoration prices are the same as 30+ years ago and collectors require traditionally long termed trained polishers. People wonder why sword prices depreciate and the hobby is so obscure, Quote
Edward Mahle Posted September 20, 2022 Author Report Posted September 20, 2022 Loving all the feed back you guys. Well by the sounds of it I'll be happy with his work. Definitely gonna reach out and set something up with Moses. So far I really like what I see. The fact that there's no problems going through shinsa is really all I needed to know. Thanks again you guys A++. 2 Quote
