New to collecting armor, first edo samurai armor

Hello everyone I'm new to this field on collecting antiques since my primary field is militaria, I know this suit is not the prettiest but it made a huge impression on me, the Kabuto does have a fair amount of damage on the right neck guard and the lacquer is coming off along with the kote also has it's lacquer coming off and seeing that the left kote has been replaced. The Do does show a good amount of bits of the rust brown flaking off near the little plates and the back. As I said it's not the prettiest but how it looks (and a cost effectiveness to this new field ) I hope to learn more and possibly find (Which I've been looking and saw a few that caught my eye) one that I can enjoy in the future.

Can’t say for the wakidate, but the other pieces are seemingly authentic, combined to a set. With some TLC quite presentable 👍

Thank you for the kind words, what was your first set like if you don't mind me asking? Shouldn't have but I did get a kabuto and menpo on the whim as a  final piece to study or as they say (for sure this time)

What is a wakidate?  I know the basic armor terms but I have no clue what it refers to. What is some good TLC I can do with this set I know it needs a bit of love but I don't want to risk damage it as a newbie. Thank you for the words I hope to get it into a presentable state eventually.

 

If there's anything you liked to see a bit closer feel free to ask, and if you don't mind me asking on some books or other armor related references that would help me in the journey.

Logan, it was a simple ni mai dou, zunari kabuto an hanpo.

Logan, Wakidate are the crest on the sides of the helmet.

Evening, so I'm guessing the suit is near like mines Luc (I'm guessing the ni mai is the style of the do)? Even if it was nothing special it still must have made an impression on you like this suit did with me, till a finer armor came along  I'm assuming.

 

I see Thomas thank you for telling what the side horns are called, so any kabuto's with horns like mine or anything else they think of putting there are refereed to wakidate, is there a term for when it's placed on the back of the kabuto?

That's right Wakidate (lit. side standing) refers to any Tatemono (crests) mounted on the sides of a helmet bowl, the term for a crest mounted on the rear is Ushirodate (lit. rear standing).

Evening Uwe, I will take some closer pictures on Wednesday on the individual parts of the armor for you to look at if you don't mind the wait.

 

 

Thank you for the clarification Thomas , so looking a helmet front to back crests goes maedate (front crest)->wakidate (side crest)-> Ushirodate (back crest) and crest in general are tatemono (?)  I'm sure there's a bit more terminology that goes for the kabuto but for basics on crest these are what I will see. I'm excited to learn the new terms for the crest I guess I'm gonna have to study a bit more now on the rest.

One more to add for kabuto tatemono: kashiradate (crest on top of the helmet, often mounted in the hachimanza).

Thank you john for letting me know another crest word of kashiradate, after a quick search on the hachimanza I realized I thought it was an air vent or might be like on my new kabuto till I quickly read that it was for the hair to pass through and for the war god throne, so was the kashiradate fixed onto the hacimanza or was it loose so it can be attached to another helmet?
