Dear Howard.

I wish I could get yari like that to follow me home!  It's a beauty, of course it needs a polish now that you know who made it............

All the best.

Thanks Geraint, actually I just happened across this accidently while doing an online search for Japanese antiques. I really would like to see it in polish but have heard so many horror stories about  trying to get it done I really don't know what to do next.

Hello

Research 'Togishi in the US'. I've heard of Robert Benson out of Hawai, Ted Tenold (here on the forum) and Woody Hall (Bob Benson's student, out of Vegas). There are few more names that my mind can't reproduce at the moment. Japanese blades HAVE TO BE polished by traditionally trained polisher. Any other attempt will ruin the blade - period. Until then keep it lightly oiled (the forum has info on that) and do not attempt to do anything to the steel whatsoever (no touching, swinging, hitting etc)!

Cheers

Thanks Darkcon,

I was going to check with Robert Benson first. He did a beautiful polish on a Muromachi Kunimune hitasura tanto for me a few years ago but I don't know how he feels about doing a yari.

Beware when looking for a polisher that you'll want to find one who is not only an excellent polisher, but also qualified to do yari.  Not all polishers have the proper training. Also, you can expect the polish to be a bit pricey with so many surfaces to polish

As Franco D mentioned below reaching out and conversing with the project would let you know whether they'll take on the task. Some of them refuse katana and wakizashi should they feel the outcome isn't in the best of the interest in both parties. Lovely detail of his polish

In defense of Robert Benson's skills's I have to add that the white spots are uchiko  I failed to notice before taking those pictures.

If I remember aright there ws an article in one of the Bushido magazines about a jumonji yari that Robert Benson owned and polished himself, I'll check it out later.

All the best.
