sabi Posted August 26, 2022 Report Posted August 26, 2022 On the block today is a fantastic example of a contemporary Oribe teabowl. Hamada Shoji said "it's impossible to create loose work in a tight society", this is particularly true when it comes to black Oribe, and why modern wares frequently pale in comparison to their ancestors. Takemura Osamu is one of the few that have managed to properly express the "amusingly distorted" or "waggishly warped" nature of kutsugata teabowls. This chawan was strongly thrown with the result displaying tremendous poise and attitude, the scraped away white slip motif of mountains providing a hard contrast to the flowing body. Measures 7.8 x 14cm, which most (myself included) consider to be the wheelhouse for this type of vessel. Bigger and they become a bit awkward and unwieldy, with smaller ones tending to lack the sheer presence that is highly coveted. Has been used as you can see from the pic, and it's an absolute joy to make tea in. Would be a fantastic piece for the user / tea practitioner, and equally so if you'd just like to put it on a shelf. Comes with its original box, cloth and paperwork, which I seem to have forgotten to snap a pic of. Can send to interested parties if needed. $350 all in via Paypal to the USA, $400 for the rest of the World. Thanks for looking and please let me know if you have any questions 👺🙏🍵
Infinite_Wisdumb Posted August 26, 2022 Report Posted August 26, 2022 I love all of the chawan that you post Evan, but have no way to place a value on them as a casual tea drinker!

It's super cliché, but honestly just buy what you like! Whatever the enjoyment you'll get out of it is worth to you. Generally speaking, chawan at galleries and department store sales etc. will start around 50-60k Yen for the younger, "up and comer" artists. Certain names will have high prices affixed to them for no other reason than the name, others because of the quality of the work. It's typical to pay in the 200k Y range for a solid bowl from highly renowned maker, tack on another 50-100k Y for their best, representative piece. But if all you need is something to make tea in, you can find pedestrian, elementary wares on Yahoo for fifty bucks.
