tsuba ....opinions please

saw this on ebay a few weeks back but was outbidded but was curious about it.....is a chinese copy or just a poor quality Japanese one....good or bad remarks please as i say i did not win the auction

Steve,

Even if that had turned out to be real, you still shouldn't have bid on it. Even if it went for $20.

Gotta start spending a few $100 on better stuff, going to get no-where looking for the low end junk tsuba. Leave those on eBay and spend some cash on a nice tsuba, you won't regret it.

too true brian...sometimes its takes time to sink in

looking at it and i have another pic somewhere on my pc...you can see the brass exposed on the rim edges and also quite clearly in the blade ana where it had been filed to fit....

how do the get the metal to patina so quick if its a copy or was it a old tsuba but just poor quality

Hi Steve,

I have a bottle of brass aging solution I use to darken new furniture hardware to match the old (I build & repair furniture). I could patina a fake Chinese tsuba in a couple minutes.

Spend lots of time looking at good stuff and then the fakes will stick out like a sore thumb.
