Ced Posted August 23, 2022 Report Posted August 23, 2022 Just curious but has anyone ever seen examples of these?? I've seen like 3 modern repro tsurugi in my lifetime (in a youtube video, not in person) and they were made as offerings to a shrine. That's about it. I've never seen any other modern recreations of jokoto or their mountings. I wonder what these ancient swords would look like when made to modern standards with modern craftsmanship... Quote
Ray Singer Posted August 23, 2022 Report Posted August 23, 2022 You do see modern utushimono by gendai smiths occasionally, including as submissions in the annual contests. A friend has a very nice example (attached) and I am including another by Yoshindo Yoshihara. 3 Quote

Most people here don't seem to have much interest in jokoto though, so that's sad. Quote
ChrisW Posted August 24, 2022 Report Posted August 24, 2022 I don't think its a lack of interest in such blades, its more the inaccessibility and/or cost of such things. Any time an antique one comes up, they're almost always either deemed a national treasure (as they should be) or are in the hands of a very high-end native Japanese collector. Modern-made ones don't tend to come up often either. Ray obviously knows way more about how often one could come across them on the market, but I suspect sites like Aoi occasionally get them. 1 Quote
