Spartancrest Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 Does it count if the design is in iron? Same number of petals 32. 74 mm x 68 mm x 4 mm 100g. [image is 'lightened' from almost black] Nice piece Grev. Great patina and you don't have to worry about rust! 1 1 1 Quote
Alex A Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 Hi Grev, aye, i was looking into San Diego tsuba, write-ups like this, https://tsubakansho.com/2019/04/18/san-diego-tsuba/ Mine is similar, but copper of some sorts, Suaka/yamagane, not sure to be honest. Difficult to age, the design seems a bit more complex (as in depth of carving) than those described as "San Diego". Nakago-ana looks to have some age. I dunno, may be later,. Lovely patina, would look nice mounted, Saw it in the sales section here a while ago, cant believe no one bought it at the price that was being asked. Anyways, like it, cute haha 2 Quote
Steve Waszak Posted August 22, 2022 Report Posted August 22, 2022 This motif and design were rather popular in the Momoyama Period. Here is an example by Kawaguchi Hoan. The addition of the gourds in gold and silver is intriguing, since chrysanthemum iconography can be tied to the imperial family and fealty to the emperor, and gourds (especially in gold) can be associated with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The shodai Hoan worked for the Asano clan, so it is interesting to speculate on possible political allusions with this tsuba. 5 Quote
