Rennz Posted August 16, 2022 Report Posted August 16, 2022 Hello, Just thought I'd share a few pictures of a bit of what was handed down to me by my grandfather, who was an Army Engineer and one of the first to step foot on Japanese soil after the bombs were dropped. I've had these for years and have done very little research but have learned a good bit from this forum, so thanks for that. I eventually would like to have the sword evaluated, polished and rewrapped by someone truly qualified. I'm working on building a nice display case for these and other items. Edit: The other items are a bayonet for an Arisaka Type 38 and my only guess for the mini katana would be a letter opener (it's very sharp though). Quote
kkeeps Posted August 16, 2022 Report Posted August 16, 2022 Welcome to the Kunimori Klub! Yours is in better polish than mine, its only ubu-ha once, I would spend extra time thinking about having it polished if not rusty. Quote
Rennz Posted August 16, 2022 Author Report Posted August 16, 2022 Hey, thanks. Yeah, I kinda wondered if a polish would take anything away from it. That's why I would get a hands-on evaluation first. Quote

Therefore, ubu-ba is not necessarily removed with the first polish or even the second. And, if you stop to think about it, can't ubu-ba be applied regardless of .... ? Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 16, 2022 Report Posted August 16, 2022 @Rennz - Zack, any stamps or numbers? Also it appears there is some sort of stamp on your tusba? @kkeeps - looks like some sort of stamping at the end of your nakago? If so, can I get some clear shots? Quote

Yes, the tusba and its accoutrements are all stamped with the digits "231". The reverse has no other stampings or special marks. 1 Quote
kkeeps Posted August 17, 2022 Report Posted August 17, 2022 Its just a slight variation of the patina on mine, no stamp 1 Quote
Rennz Posted August 17, 2022 Author Report Posted August 17, 2022 Yep, no other stamps, numbers, or special marks anywhere on my nakago either: 1 Quote

I was seeing the larger, roundish spot in the blurry image. Turns out it was simply a wear mark, or corrosion. Thanks guys for checking! Quote
Rennz Posted August 17, 2022 Author Report Posted August 17, 2022 Ok, so I'm just posting some pics to see if I can capture any hamon, hada, nie, etc. and maybe get some thoughts on anything anyone sees. ...just tryna learn a bit. I took the sword out in the sun for some better light and wiped all the oil off for a clearer look. Quote

You would need a shirasaya before having it polished. For the shirasaya, you may contact John Tirado, wrappig : David MCDonald and polish Woodraw Hall. 1 Quote
