SwordGuyJoe Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 That's right folks, strap on your helmets and keep drool cups at the ready, because I have a dumb question. I have posted a few times regarding buying gunto mounts for a couple of my swords and was told that I had a slim to none chance to find these that would fit my blades. So my question is more towards nihonto, vice gunto stuff. If I have a wak, kat, ken (did you guys see the ken I bought? Still looking for some feedback), etc. mounted in a shirasaya and I wanted to buy koshirae for it, including a tsuba, how is it possible to find koshirae that will fit and not gunto mounts. I am sure there is a good answer, I just don't know it. Thanks for the help. Quote
Mark Green Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Joe, There are a pile of places to buy sword fittings, for all types of Nihonto. Check out the link pages above. Many will make all new 'clothes' for your stuff. I have two swords at Fred Lohman's right now being Daisho'ed up, with all new stuff. There are likely 'many' in Japan, and a few more throughout the world. Surf around, and you should be able to fine a hald dozen quickly. As far as finding used Koshirae that will 'fit' your swords that can be VERY difficult at best. Most Tsuba can be made to fit any sword of the correct size. Same goes for most all of the Fittings. But Saya&Tsuka, are all custom made for each weapon. It is the only way to be sure. Mark G Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted May 6, 2009 Author Report Posted May 6, 2009 Thanks Mark. I have just read a few posts of people holding out for period pieces that match their blades and was scratching my head on it. I appreciate your help. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted May 6, 2009 Report Posted May 6, 2009 Joe, Rather than spend what would be necessary to fit your shira-saya mounted blade with new koshirae, for about the same cost you could buy a sword mounted in koshirae you like. Then, rather than having one sword in koshirae and a useless shira-saya, you would have 2 swords. The purchase of tsuba, F & K, and menuki, and paying to have a saya and tsuka made and wrapped, adds up. Grey Quote
