Alban L Posted July 16, 2022 Report Posted July 16, 2022 Good morning, Here are some photos of a sword in tachi mounts from an upcoming sell. Any idea on the interest of this sword ? Cannot see much of the blade, I have asked for more especially on the kissaki and nakago but not sure I will receive it before the sell. It looks to be in poor conditions. Blade is said to be 29" long, total 41" for the sword. Tsuba looks lovely with masts in front of Mont Fuji, but I am more surprised by what looks like to be a sort of leather strap on tsuka. Is is possible on an old sword ? Quote
NewB Posted July 16, 2022 Report Posted July 16, 2022 I hope I'm not seeing hagire.. otherwise tough to say but seems real from such limited resources I'd pass J. 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted July 16, 2022 Report Posted July 16, 2022 As John said, who knows what could be hiding under there.... The full shape and Nakago are needed to determine if it's a Tachi. The mounts do look to be of decent quality from those photos. 1 Quote
Alban L Posted July 16, 2022 Author Report Posted July 16, 2022 Thanks, if that's what you saw I think it is only a mark without link with the small nick on the edge. Also finger prints, poor preservation by previous owner... Quote

It may not be expensive at all, as I am interested by tsuba and as other mounts may be interesting too I could give a chance to this sword, no matter what is hiding under there if it stays not so expensive. vajo Posted July 16, 2022 Report Posted July 16, 2022 Looks nice. No hagire for me. Nice koshirae in Handachi style. Quote
Matsunoki Posted July 16, 2022 Report Posted July 16, 2022 That looks a really sleepy and interesting sword with nice “samurai taste” iron mounts. I’m not so sure re the possibility of hagire. If you enlarge the last image there are three parallel lines at right angles to the edge and two of them look as if they may emerge from small edge chips. Possible choji hamon peeping out at us? The tsuka wrap is also good quality…possibly leather or lacquered doeskin. I would certainly take a chance on it on the basis “hope for the best but prepare for the worst”. 1 1 Quote
Wolfmanreid Posted July 17, 2022 Report Posted July 17, 2022 If not too expensive that looks like a sword that might be worth taking a punt on. I suspect the blade will tidy up quite a bit with the application of nothing more aggressive than a soft rag and a bit of choji oil. Quote
Alban L Posted July 18, 2022 Author Report Posted July 18, 2022 Here are some other photographs of this sword, won't receive more regarding the Nakago. Quote
Geraint Posted July 18, 2022 Report Posted July 18, 2022 Dear Alban. To answer your question about the tsukamai then yes indeed it might be lacquered leather, or lacquered fabric or even paper. Many different materials are used, personally I find the style on this sword attractive. If you are interested there is quite a bit of information on tsukamaki on this site, http://www.tsukamaki.net/ All the best. 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 18, 2022 Report Posted July 18, 2022 It is probably baleen or lacquered paper. 1 Quote
Alban L Posted July 18, 2022 Author Report Posted July 18, 2022 Thanks Jean, didn't know about baleen or lacquered paper ! It is indeed very similar to what was discussed here : Quote
Alban L Posted July 19, 2022 Author Report Posted July 19, 2022 Good morning, This other detail photo makes me think it is lacquered leather : Quote
Alban L Posted July 20, 2022 Author Report Posted July 20, 2022 Hi all, this sword was finally sold 2500$, way too expensive compared to what I would give for a blade in this condition and without any idea of what's under the tsuka..! Quote
