Rich T Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 A Bungo tsuba. I have never seen one before Rich http://world.choshuya.co.jp/sale/tousou ... /index.htm Quote
Bazza Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 A Bungo tsuba. I have never seen one before Rich That's not a tsuba - it's a Chinese Dentist Colonel's belt buckle!!!! (Before anyone gets their toga in a knot I should say that Milt and I - and Rich T - go back a long way...) By the way, if you click on the Choshuya Ginza link you will see the phrase "Kawari gata" - different shape. For more on the usage of kawari see the thread viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4772&p=36701&hilit=kawari#p36701 In fact, in finding that thread I saw numerous others that I'll have to go and read, some associated with kantei. Pete Klein Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 He-he-he -- it does look like a belt buckle! LOL Hey -- I want a US Dentist example!!! ROFL!!! Doctor Pete Quote
Ted Tenold Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 He-he-he -- it does look like a belt buckle! LOL Hey -- I want a US Dentist example!!! ROFL!!! Doctor Pete You mean one that shows the implements of a "nice long root canal"? (Sorry all, but it's been a longtime inside joke between Doctuh Pete and I :D ) Very interesting tsuba. I can't recall ever seeing one either. As an interesting excercise just for fun; If Rich had not already identified this piece as Bungo, what would some kantei be? Yeah, yeah, yeah, Shoami is bound to raise it's grinning head, but don't forget to comment on why. For myself, I think I would have called it Hizen. The texture and color of the iron looks quite Hizen to me with a sandy russet appearance. The composition somehow drives me into the kind of thing Hizen might design and the gold vine work also looks like a Kyushu element. Also, Rich; Is there any points of "Bungo-esque" identification that you can help us with? Quote
Pete Klein Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 Turn up the nitrous! LOL I think I would have said early Kyo Shoami because of the use of nunome and also that it has a resemblance to Heianjo work which is from the same area. Quote

If I was to guess first off, I would have gone down the Akita 秋田 or Bizen 備前正阿弥 Shôami path. I have also seen plenty of both Hizen and Yoshirô tsuba with this type of design. However this style of nunome would not be the norm for Hizen, though Yoshirô might get a look in. It would have been great to see the kanteisho for this tsuba, to see if it actually says Bungo ????? I might ask Imazu San. The words Pete Klein and dental probe, used in the same sentence, scare me LOL........................ Rich Quote
Guido Posted April 26, 2009 Report Posted April 26, 2009 The following Tsuba shows 3 forceps for extracting teeth, and is signed on the Omote "Tame Ko-sensei Kinsaku" - respectfully made for Dr. Klein. It is believed to have been made for Pete's ancestors before they immigrated to the US via Germany (where the second picture, a painting depicting medicus Bonifaz Klein [the elder], was recently discovered). John A Stuart Posted April 30, 2009 Report Posted April 30, 2009 Hi All, I was leafing through the Tsuba Kanshoki and found this very similar tsuba. It is labeled as Heianjozogan. Sorry for the poor pic. John Quote
Rich T Posted April 30, 2009 Author Report Posted April 30, 2009 Hi John, yes that is a well documented Heinajo that one, but with shinchû zôgan, not kin nunome like the Bungo guard. A nice one though, I like this shape. Rich Quote
