Steve,

I think you need to put a leash and a muzzle on your whim, because that dog can't hunt. From a collector's view, it looks to have no redeeming qualities. It's very banged up, looks like it was thoroughly scrubbed and even perhaps treated with an etchant.

Sorry to be blunt, but intervention is the act of a friend. :)

It is possible (though I cannot really tell from the photo's) that it was something once, but that day has long gone sorry.

I have a guard that is a complete fake, total Chinese rubbish. It was my very first (a victim of no study and Ebay). I keep it to remind me of my journey thus far. You may want to do the same.

First timers....... buy from a dealer, there is plenty of affordable stuff out there.

Cheers and better luck next time

right.......i have the tsuba in hand now and its no looker nor is it valuable to any collector but i like to know what / when / whom etc :D

the pictures do not do it justice :D as i presume the camera flash bleached it.

its as follows,,,,,

maru gata.....76.25mm x 67.28mm

2 x hitsu annas with no casting flanges or edges inside.

kaku mimi of 6mm

quite heavy at 175 grammes.

has hammer marks and undulations on the faces.

so basically thats all i can see about it....it actually fits one of my slender bisen wakizashis but its not going on it lol.

i reckon its meiji or late edo but definately not chinese  musr be worth peanuts.

on a serious note when did brass tsubas come more common than iron and were it easeier to produce and manufacture
