Rich S Posted April 24, 2009 Report Posted April 24, 2009 Don't know quite where to post this, but Yahoo has announced that they are closing down Geocities later this summer. That means my mirror site will go. I'm looking for a free webhost for the mirror site. Anyone know of any still free webhosts? Need about 5 meg space and FTP access. Thanks The Earthlink site will still be up, but has limited band width. Rich S Quote
DirkO Posted April 24, 2009 Report Posted April 24, 2009 Rich, I'd be more than happy to host your site at no expense for you and without any popups or adverts. FTP access isn't a problem either. Please PM if you're interested to work out the details. Quote
Ted Tenold Posted April 24, 2009 Report Posted April 24, 2009 Yes, indeed! Very kind and generous of you to offer Dirk. Quote
Rich S Posted April 24, 2009 Author Report Posted April 24, 2009 Dirk - Much appreciate the offfer. Let's see when Geocities actually goes off and how much the Earthlink site is used. I set up the Geocities mirror way back when my site was one of only a few and had real bandwidth problems. Now with all the new good sites, bandwidth may not be a problem with the earthlink site. It's not that much used anymore anyway. Let's wait and see, but I do again thank you for the offer and may end up down the road taking you up on it. Thanks again Rich S Quote
Brian Posted April 24, 2009 Report Posted April 24, 2009 Rich, If needed, the NMB will of course be very happy to host the mirror site too at no charge. We have the bandwidth and space. Or another idea is that we can pay for a hosting account with it's own bandwidth for your site. That could come out of the annual donation money which I think is exactly for this kind of thing. As you said, you might not need it...but feel free to ask anytime, glad to help keep that valuable site up. NMB could even pay towards registering http://www.japaneseswordindex.com and hosting it there? Brian Quote
Rich S Posted April 24, 2009 Author Report Posted April 24, 2009 Brian - Thanks for the offer, but as you said, let's wait and see what happens. With all the good, new sites, mine isn't used as much anymore and the earthlink site may very well have enough bandwidth. Certainly wouldn't accept donations for a host - if I need a paid host, I can do that. I do appreciate the offer though. Rich S Quote
b.hennick Posted April 24, 2009 Report Posted April 24, 2009 HI Rich: I disagree! I use your site quite often. Most times when I Google something it takes me to your site. It is often referred to on the messageboard. It is a wonderful valuable resource. I would offer the JSSUS web-site as a host but I would need Board approval. Since it is against JSSUS policy to recommend vendors and artisans I would need those links removed In any case I am sure that there would be a good home for your site. The information is great and there is so much to learn on it. It must be maintained with easy access. Thanks for all the hard work that went into what I believe is the most useful single site for Nihonto on the net. Quote
Kevin Posted April 24, 2009 Report Posted April 24, 2009 Rich, I'd be more than happy to host your site at no expense for you and without any popups or adverts. FTP access isn't a problem either. Please PM if you're interested to work out the details. Ditto. Kevin Quote
Rich S Posted April 25, 2009 Author Report Posted April 25, 2009 Thanks Kevin and Barry - Barry - To remove all the links on my site would reduce it's usefulness a lot IMHO. Plus it would mean rewriting every page on the site. Can't do that, but thanks for the offer. The earthlink site is and will still be there. Rich S Quote
Justin Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 Rich, Your site is fantastic. I don't use it much now as my reference collection has grown enough to cover most aspects of nihontou. It is still great to know it is there and it must be protected at all costs. I would be more than happy to donate money to keep it safe and secure (if you have problems with Geocities and Earthlink). Thanks for all your hard work setting it up and keeping it running. Quote
Jean Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 Rich, Thi site has benn my first Nihonto website and will probably be my last one (BTW, I use it every day) Quote
Ted Tenold Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 With all the good, new sites, mine isn't used as much anymore Rich S Being at or near the top of several thousand Google hits proves this untrue Rich. I've been to you site four times in two days. Don't sell your site and efforts short. I'd offer that your site has had broader impact on educating both newbies and veterans than any others. It's a great starting point, waypoint, and destination. Hey, ya can't mess with the classics! Quote
Rich T Posted April 25, 2009 Report Posted April 25, 2009 Hi Rich, there are a few out there. Seems like you have about 500 gig at your disposal though LOL. Here's the first one I found http://freebeehosting.com/hosting.php Rich Quote

Not to worry, it will be several months before anything happens to the Yahoo site and the Earthlink site is there to stay. Rich S Quote
