PNSSHOGUN Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 Need to see the other side of the tang for accurate assessment. Quote
tawatchai_s Posted July 2, 2022 Author Report Posted July 2, 2022 Thank you very much for your help. If so, how much the price should it be? Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 Made in "Spring 1944" Can we see the latch release button on the other side? Type 94 or 98 Japanese Officer gunto. Unusual pattern on the fuchi (copper collar on the handle). These run in the range of $900-1,400 USD. Varies with the buyer's market, with the condition of the fittings and blade, and whether the blade, itself, is traditionally made or not. Yours has a nice looking blade with a very straight saguha hamon (straight temper line), but I don't see the smith listed in either Slough or Sesko, so it's probably not traditionally made. Are there any small stamps higher on the tang, might have to remove the tsuba/seppa set (handguard and spacers) to see one. They can be on the back edge of the tang, too. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 I have a couple of Yoshiharu on file with stamped numbers at the end of the tang. You didn't show the full tang on the side of the smith's name. Anything down there? 1 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 Bruce, a small point: it cannot be a Type 94 if made after 1938! 1 Quote
tawatchai_s Posted July 2, 2022 Author Report Posted July 2, 2022 Thank you very much for valuable information. As I asked the seller, it not has anymore number or mark stamp on any part of the sword, tsuba and others part as well. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted July 2, 2022 Report Posted July 2, 2022 DOHH! (I thought we had a emoji for that!) Although.....technically speaking, the blade could have been refitted with 94 fittings. But, truthfully, when I typed that I was hyper-focused on the unusual fuchi and wasn't thinking about the date. 1 1 Quote

Bryce Posted July 3, 2022 Report Posted July 3, 2022 G'day Tawatchai, The kissaki (point) of this sword has been badly reshaped, possibly because of a broken tip. This will seriously affect the value. This is the sort of shape it shoud have. Cheers, Bryce Quote
tawatchai_s Posted July 3, 2022 Author Report Posted July 3, 2022 Thank you very much Bryce. The zoom in picture of the kissaki is like this. Hope it not from the reshaped one. Quote
Bryce Posted July 3, 2022 Report Posted July 3, 2022 I am afraid it does look to have been reshaped. The ko shinogi and cutting edge of the kissaki are generally roughly parallel. Yours aren't. Most likely the tip was broken off and the point was reshaped after. This may mean that most of the hardened area in the point (boshi) has been lost. If there is still plenty of hardened area left, it is less of a problem. Cheers, Bryce 1 Quote
Nihonto Chicken Posted July 4, 2022 Report Posted July 4, 2022 FWIW, link to another Yoshiharu thread including other embedded links plus the mei on my blade. Looks like this smith liked suguha hamon. However, as has been noted already, the kissaki on the OP's example is a big red flag. https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/9552-translation-help-please/#comment-97421 Quote
tawatchai_s Posted July 4, 2022 Author Report Posted July 4, 2022 Thank you very much Bryce and Nihonto Chicken. Wait and see when it arrive. Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted October 25, 2022 Report Posted October 25, 2022 @tawatchai_s - Your photo doesn't show the full, bare nakago. Could I get a full one of both sides? Any stamped numbers at the end? Quote
