JT303 Posted June 24, 2022 Report Posted June 24, 2022 Hello to all, I am new to this and was hoping I could get some assistance with translation on this Kogatana/Kazuka. The ornamentation is really nice and I believe the first name on the swordsmith is Kiyo (but cant make out second) Thanks for all the assistance !! Quote
Ray Singer Posted June 24, 2022 Report Posted June 24, 2022 Kogatana is signed Etchu no kami Fujiwara Masatoshi. 2 Quote
JT303 Posted June 24, 2022 Author Report Posted June 24, 2022 Awesome ! Thank you Ray !! Is there any history on this? Much appreciated !! Quote
Geraint Posted June 25, 2022 Report Posted June 25, 2022 Hi James. Welcome to NMB. For information about this smith see here, http://www.nihontocraft.com/Mishina.html As you will see he is well documented but just a word of caution, the signatures on ko gatana, i.e. the blade, are usually held lightly as many of them are clearly not made by the person whose signature they bear. Enjoy the journey! All the best. 1 Quote
JT303 Posted June 25, 2022 Author Report Posted June 25, 2022 Awesome !! Thank you all again so much for the additional info. I will take more pictures of the full sword and sheath as well. There is more inscriptions on them so hopefully that will help to show more background. Thank you very much Ray, Geraint and Moriyama !! I will post those soon. Is this something that should be sent for appraisal to Japan? Quote
ROKUJURO Posted June 25, 2022 Report Posted June 25, 2022 James, in case you have more to read: We have a special translation forum here on NMB. Quote

JT303 Posted July 4, 2022 Author Report Posted July 4, 2022 Hello all and thank you again for the assistance with translation. The following are the best images I could get on the sword. The only history we could find on this sword is Wakizashi Blades that were attributed to Moroku Kangmotto Mumie The Mumie Tang is unsigned to the best of my knowledge. The sheathe has an interesting flake that appears green but in certain light is purple. Thanks for any additional thoughts and input !! Enjoy ! Quote
ROKUJURO Posted July 4, 2022 Report Posted July 4, 2022 James, that looks indeed like a nice WAKIZASHI! Please take care not to touch the blade with your bare fingers to avoid corrosion! Do you mean that you compared it to WAKIZASHI blades made by MAGOROKU KANEMOTO? It has indeed a MINO look. MU MEI means "without signature", so the tang will probably show no characters. The sheath is probably lacquered with AOGAI, a kind of mother of pearl made from abalone (PAUA) shells. Quote
JT303 Posted July 5, 2022 Author Report Posted July 5, 2022 Hello Rokujuro, I am not sure as my Dad asked in regards to that and I think the spelling is off. (What would MINO look be from?) We are trying to learn as much as we can about it and its history . Any additional info or links would be grateful !! James T Quote
