robinalexander Posted May 14, 2022 Report Posted May 14, 2022 Hi all, I recently bought a few seppa from Japan and after a close look found that three had, or may have, engravings of some kind. The most outstanding is a seppa with what I first thought were hammer marks but on closer in inspection it looks more like a 'picture' ....leaves....hills... or, is that simply my imagination? For clarity, I will post a couple of pics of the first seppa (ref above) accompanied with a carpenters pencil 'rubbing'. I will post the second and third seppa on following posts so as to avoid any confusion If the second and third seppa actually have legible markings, it would be great to know what they mean. Thank you. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted May 14, 2022 Report Posted May 14, 2022 Wow, Rob! That first one looks like leaves! Quote
robinalexander Posted May 14, 2022 Author Report Posted May 14, 2022 Yes I know Bruce ...tks. I certainly enjoyed 'rubbing' it, The more I looked, the more I thought it may be the 'holy grail' of seppa 😉 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted May 14, 2022 Report Posted May 14, 2022 In my opinion, these are damages by hammer-blows. Someone (not a very sensitive person) tried to fit the SEPPA to the dimensions of a blade, I think. Usually, SEPPA are not decorated except for their rim. What you see as signatures may indeed be marks by the craftsman. Not at all unusual. 1 Quote
Brian Posted May 14, 2022 Report Posted May 14, 2022 Agree. It's not a feature. Seppa are disposable 1 Quote
robinalexander Posted May 15, 2022 Author Report Posted May 15, 2022 Thanks for your thoughts on this Jean Collin and Brian. The reverse side is devoid of any scuffing or marks...unusual. Quote
