鎌田 Kamata for sure, but a bit of a mystery in terms of who he is as a swordsmith. There was a sword scholar in the late 18th century named Kamata using these same kanji, so maybe this person is related to that scholar.

Ok I just returned home and took some pictures of a similar Tanto that I own as promised. I don’t know if anyone can make out the mei but I got it the best that I could. Hope you enjoy3C98EDDB-ABA1-4550-9BD5-04AC7E82DF8D.thumb.jpeg.b920624f6575ceb54d63eda319c3e1b9.jpeg3C98EDDB-ABA1-4550-9BD5-04AC7E82DF8D.thumb.jpeg.b920624f6575ceb54d63eda319c3e1b9.jpeg1707B47F-C5C1-48A5-AD5F-BED83F993736.thumb.jpeg.1937880c51d983f31ef138311f6ef0ae.jpeg08CD86DB-C323-4CF5-8A7D-01836609583F.thumb.jpeg.b975a92fce2aa887170e67d88323991a.jpegEA220B18-D32D-45C0-8E8D-55F51931A8E7.thumb.jpeg.aa1f5423f5ff3d2f5fb251f1f9a23394.jpeg

BIZEN OSAFUNE no JU..... (MASAYUKI?). Indeed very difficult to read. Lighting from the side may enhance the readability.

Otherwise a beautiful blade!

I was told that sometimes they were carried by the pilots, but you know how that goes, anything is possible. I was also told by a high end Japanese sword expert/collector that a few that he had seen when the leather was removed it revealed information on the Saya. No way I will ever attempt to remove the leather from mine to find out. Also originally on mine the mekugi was completely covered and the leather had to be carefully cut to remove it to check for a signature   Glad you are enjoying these two Tantos
