Recently bought this online without seeing the nagako. To my surprise there was a signature on both sides. Would really appreciate a translation.

Just for your interest Jonathan,

here is an oshigata of a Shimada blade signed the same as yours (not dated). SUNSHIU SHIMADA JU MIKAWA NO KAMI SADASUKE. This one was in Type 98 Army mounts. I sold it about 1982.

Thanks George. These signatures are pretty consistent.

When I bought this I was expecting a heavily osuriage mumei blade. Very surprised to find a signature.

 

it’s a shame it’s in such rough shape. I can tell there is some nice hada beneath the rust.

It's nice to discover a signature, but on the flip side, the tang has been shaved down as well as shortened.  It might otherwise be worthy of mei confirmation and restoration.
