Mystery tsuba

No idea about this one other than its very large at 9x9x0.4xm and the sukashi appears to be filled with lacquer. £100 plus postage.

I think that the lacquer is covering something. The number of layers required to fill that space would be huge. The lacquer looks to be quite new.

Looks a bit like a Saotome plate. No idea about lacquer, but agree with Barry.

The lacquer looks to have been worn away by the seppa.

Old fingernail polish, wouldn't want to bite those nails. Should of used the gold flake color, price would of gone up.

No.  I've seen this piece in hand and under the microscope.  The black areas are filled sukashi, the black Lacquer is newer, but is maybe late as Meiji or so but definitely not modan.  The filler is that traditional stuff you sometimes see used to build up mimis, etc.  It could well be that the filler/lacquer was done to spiff up the piece for sale to tourists at that time. And yeah, like Rich posted I would say saotome rather than shouami.  good price.  Somebody should buy it...

The J/K after the comment was for joke. The Tsuba is just brushed with something foreign.   It's no joke that tsubas have been "touched up".

I like it the way it is. Part of its history, the filling and lacquering. Stripping it ‘back’ might risk removing rust and exposing steel. If I was happy with the postal system right now I would buy it.
