vittorio Posted March 22, 2009 Report Posted March 22, 2009 Good evening,I'm an Italian Collector and I'd like your help about this blade. I think it is a Koto Katana ,Suriage , in WW11 mounts. I was able to translate 2 Kanji's ITO XX Saku.(??) I think the Signature was added later ,maybe from who cut the Nagako. Any help is welcome. Thanks in advance Vittorio Quote
Nobody Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 I cannot decipher the 3rd kanji either. This is only my guess, though it may be just another answer. 伊藤照作 – Ito Terusaku (or Shosaku?) In this case, the last “saku” does not mean “made”. It may be a part of his first name. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 The signature reminds me of Gunto signatures; it would look perfectly at home on an oil tempered blade from WWII. It looks, also, as if some rust has been removed inside and around the Kanji. Grey Quote
Lorenzo Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Ciao Vittorio. Is that habaki in iron? Quote
vittorio Posted March 23, 2009 Author Report Posted March 23, 2009 Sorry Grey , but I still think the Blade is much older-just the signature is from the War Time- Vittorio Quote

Mark Green Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Hi Gang, I saw that blade on ebay?, I thought it looked like someone chisled his name on it. Or had someone do that. The sword looked well cut down, suriage, and I would think any original mei would have been cut off, or close to it. I also couldn't tell from the pics that were available if the temper was good all the way around, and there looked to be some core steel showing. The sword is much older than ww2. It was hard to tell from the pics. just how old. Maybe koto? vittorio, Take some new pics and send them allong. Not bad looking if you got it at the right price, and the hamon is ok. JMHO, Mark G Quote
Grey Doffin Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 The blade is much older than WWII; no doubt about that. I was commenting on the hand writing, nothing more. Grey Quote
Mark Green Posted March 23, 2009 Report Posted March 23, 2009 Yes, I figured that Gray. Not commenting on your post. But I think your right on, on the time frame of the new signiture. Maybe the name of the guy that took it to war. Or something his parents put on it? Or I suppose, if a mei was removed to put it in ww2 mounts, it could be the smith? The kanji on the habaki seems to be the same as the first two on the mei. That leads me to think it is the name of the guy that took this sword to war. Quote
