Spartancrest Posted March 17, 2022 Report Posted March 17, 2022 I have asked this question in another thread but it went unanswered - what is a set of 3 matching tsuba [or other fittings] called? 大小と 小さい Daishō to chīsai ? There must be a name as they certainly exist. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/3-signed-antique-Japanese-sword-tsuba-fuchi-kashira 1 Quote
Rich S Posted March 17, 2022 Report Posted March 17, 2022 I don't know what they are called, but I have a trisho (my name for them) of Saotome tsuba. 1 1 Quote
Brian Posted March 17, 2022 Report Posted March 17, 2022 Since that theme is so common, it would be easy to collect a set of 3 sizes. But doesn't mean they were made together or ever worn or owned as a set of 3. I suspect they were still made to be singles or pairs of swords. 2 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted March 17, 2022 Author Report Posted March 17, 2022 Rich, I like the term Trisho but what happens when you add in a nodachi 野太刀? Yon-sho or Shi-sho? Quote
Spartancrest Posted March 18, 2022 Author Report Posted March 18, 2022 Hi Brian you are right I just completed a triple set myself last night - as a bonus I get a lot of rust to correct but hey it is all fun. Anyone seen a really big [over 90mm] version of the design? Preferably with this seal. For any who are interested this is not how to 'clean off rust' https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/tetsugendo-school-tsuba-floral-532919159 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted March 19, 2022 Report Posted March 19, 2022 Are we looking for a Japanese name or a Western name? As Brian has said, they probably came together by collecting coincidence; the tsuba-ko must have made several of each version quite independently. If it's a Western name, then how about the Holy Trinity of Tsuba? 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted March 19, 2022 Author Report Posted March 19, 2022 Yeah but there are more than three sizes possible! How about a royal flush, or quadrella. [yes there is such a word] Maybe I could name them after the Marx brothers? 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted March 19, 2022 Report Posted March 19, 2022 So, if there is no recognized thing as a Tsuba 'set' (above 2) per se, Dale, then having a name for it is a moot point. What we want is a series of names, perhaps, but your thread, your call! 1 Quote
