JustinJustin Posted March 11, 2022 Report Posted March 11, 2022 Hello- I really appreciated all of the help and expertise with the last mumei wakizashi that I picked up. So much so I impulsively:( bought another while awaiting some much needed books. Any ideas on the age of the blade for this small sword. Overall in decent shape though with poor polish. The ?makati is dark and oxidized and remains without signature. As was recommended last time I did pick up a stand and some choji oil while I continue to learn and enjoy these blades. kindly, Justin Quote
JustinJustin Posted March 11, 2022 Author Report Posted March 11, 2022 Thanks again. I meant to say the nakago is dark and oxidized. Quote
David Flynn Posted March 11, 2022 Report Posted March 11, 2022 Possibly Shinto era. Unfortunately, it's very low quality. It has at least, 2 blisters ( Fukure)in the Ji. 1 Quote
JustinJustin Posted March 11, 2022 Author Report Posted March 11, 2022 Thanks David! That’s helpful. I got a good deal on it and can see the differences between this and my older blade. But I will definitely spend time reading before acquiring any more:) Kindly, -Justin Quote

Forget about books until you can memorize all the Japanese words and meaning in The Japanese Sword Index. It's Free!!! After that, IF you're still interested should you start to buy books.. The flash Kanji (漢字) cards come after. I've done this for a few decades and still have to look up a description here and there. What's with the community and selling books to Novices anyway. Quote
David Flynn Posted March 12, 2022 Report Posted March 12, 2022 Actually, viewing swords and reading the books should be done together. Unfortunately, unless one has access to many, many swords, it's very hard to learn. Ideally, having a mentor is the way to go. Quote
JakeNYC Posted March 12, 2022 Report Posted March 12, 2022 Welcome to this fascinating hobby! Many great people here in the forum. Just ask if you ever need it and someone will help out. Quote
JustinJustin Posted March 12, 2022 Author Report Posted March 12, 2022 Thank you all for the feedback! Yes already it’s fascinating just delving into the history of the samurai and sword making process. Even having a few cheaper swords still offers a chance to learn with the books. Similar to how a plastic skeleton might help with anatomy I suppose . kindly, Justin Quote
