ShawnW Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 Hello. Novice alert! I'm wondering if this hamon looks traditionally done (authentic), or more for cosmetic reasons. Many, many thanks. Cheers, Shawn Quote
DTM72 Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 If your question is, Is this a real hamon or one applied by hadori stone, my answer is that it appears to be a real tempered edge hamon. Closer, high-quality pictures would tell us more, but a hadori stone did not create what you are seeing. Now if your question is, Is this hamon for pure function or is it more for aesthetic...I would say the tanto appears to be from the late EDO era and it was a time of relative peace. That being said, swords tended to have more flashy or stylestic hamons. Hope this answers your question, either way. Quote
ShawnW Posted February 16, 2022 Author Report Posted February 16, 2022 Thanks for the informative reply! Especially considering my vague question. I'm sure everyone here appreciates the difficulty in photographing a hamon but I've tried to get some better pics. Hopefully they are of some use. The pic of the full blade is altered (light adjusted) only to better show the overall pattern. Again, much appreciated. Cheers Quote
Franco Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 Hello, FYI, https://markussesko.com/2015/05/29/kantei-3-hamon-boshi-1/ Unless you are visually seeing the actual elements that make up and define the hamon, like nie and nioi, then perhaps what you're seeing is only the makeup, hadori, which is a polisher's interpretation that follows the hamon to some varying degree. 1 Quote
NewB Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 I'd like to suggest that this is - kobushigata hamon mixed with suguha. I very well may be wrong but this is what my eyes see. You can research it online and you'll find the schools that are famous for making it. Cheers J. Quote
ShawnW Posted February 16, 2022 Author Report Posted February 16, 2022 You answered my question before I could ask it! Cheers Quote
