Dear members,

I'm considering this wakizashi as a first purchase. I'd be delighted to hear your thoughts and an appropriate price range. Thanks in advance. Sascha

Sascha,

welcome to the NMB!

It is generally a good idea to purchase a sword in good condition, and recent papers are a plus. Concerning the price range, that is your personal thing. If you had to sell a kidney for it, I think that would be exaggerated, but the first point is: Do you like the sword, and 2) does the price range correspond to you income situation?  3) Is the price of the item comparable with similar swords?

Some collectors also think about the resale value and see Japanese swords as investment. This is a difficult field, as all depends on the market situation. When people are starving, you won't sell anything of value!

Generally I have observed that very high value items always sell in case you have good contacts to high-end collectors and know the market. There are always a few wealthy people even in bad times!

Hello,

As someone that started as yourself I suggest you get acquainted with the terminology at least to the basic level to where you have a good understanding of what you're considering to purchase. Also, the FOR SALE section here is comprised of knowledgeable and honest people that will always be there for you.

Just a suggestion

Do you mean shoshin?正真

Where did you find those two words? A blade will usually be one or the other, but that paperwork (unreadable at that angle) looks to be attesting that it's not 偽名 gimei.

At a quick glance a package like that might be somewhere around 1,500 to 2,000 USD? Could be more, could be less, depending on the fine quality detail. A good all-round starter piece, no? Don't think of it as an investment per se, but more as a learning tool and firm stepping stone.
