drl Posted February 10, 2022 Report Posted February 10, 2022 I am interested in purchasing a Daisho set (katana and wakizashi), Tokubetsu Kicho/Hozon or higher with complete certification in outstanding condition. The blades must be signed though not necessarily by the same smith (although that would be nice). Edo period or earlier. Ideally, the Daisho would be as complete as possible, including original kozuka, saya, and other koshirae components. Even more ideal— with original tsunagi and shirasaya and wooden blades. Target price is up to $30,000 USD. Thank you for your time and for any suggested leads on such a special Daisho. Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted February 10, 2022 Report Posted February 10, 2022 Here are two nice possibilities that are up for sale currently in Japan. 3,2M Yen - Nobukuni (Shigekane) 1717 & Moritsugu 1708 : https://www.sanmei.com/contents/media/K6997_6998_S2226_PUP_E.html 2,0M Yen - Kiyohide 1848 & 1849 : https://www.touken-matsumoto.jp/ja/product/shousai/DS-0007 This is not my field of collecting but I feel that package from Matsumoto is very nice. 1 Quote

drl Posted February 10, 2022 Author Report Posted February 10, 2022 Thank you so much for the suggestions. 🙏 Quote
drl Posted February 11, 2022 Author Report Posted February 11, 2022 Any more suggestions? I’ve really enjoyed learning about the suggested Daisho in the replies above. Thank you! Quote
Nihontocollector752 Posted February 11, 2022 Report Posted February 11, 2022 Forgive me for throwing water on the fire but neither of the examples in the links above are "true" Daisho 2 Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted February 11, 2022 Report Posted February 11, 2022 If you are searching for an example at that price level, it would be best to find a true Daisho like Jimmy mentioned. Quote
Gakusee Posted February 11, 2022 Report Posted February 11, 2022 Well, please read Darcy Brockbank's blog entry on daisho. You will realise that the so called 'true' daisho are extremely rare. Quote

Tis one thing to have a katana and wakizashi signed by the same smith and matching koshirae, and papered individually. <-- very nice Tis much more to have the aformentioned set papered together as a daisho, on the same paper. <-- Goldmine! Jussi Ekholm Posted February 11, 2022 Report Posted February 11, 2022 Well here is one that Tsuruginoya has by Tairyūsai Sōkan but I didn't post it earlier as it is in shirasaya and the OP is looking one with koshirae. 3,5M yen, both signed for 6th month of 1867: https://www.tsuruginoya.com/items/a00066.html Quote
drl Posted February 11, 2022 Author Report Posted February 11, 2022 Thank you, everyone—I very much enjoy learning about nihonto and I’m grateful for the wise advice. I would be willing to expand my budget for the right daisho. Please keep your suggestions coming! 🙏 Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted February 11, 2022 Report Posted February 11, 2022 This sold recently, just putting it out to show the scope of things that are around. If you are not in a hurry, more options will pop up. https://www.samurai-nippon.net/SHOP/N-809.html Quote
drl Posted February 11, 2022 Author Report Posted February 11, 2022 I enjoyed Darcy Brockbank's article-- thank you, Gakusee. If it helps expand the identification of daisho (with koshirae) candidates that might pop on people's radars, I am happy to consider ones up to $40,000 USD. So far I have identified several for which I very much like the blades, smith provenance, and/or components of the koshirae... but none that I've found yet have yet hit all the marks, including all the wonderful suggestions made in this thread. I'm grateful for any additional candidates this community can bring to my attention. Thank you! Quote
jlawson Posted February 16, 2022 Report Posted February 16, 2022 Not sure if this is just a duplicate post or looking for something different. Here is a nice Daisho set though. https://www.nihonto.com/11-4-21/ Quote
