Kiipu Posted February 9, 2022 Report Posted February 9, 2022 Ran across this one over at GBF. Antique Japanese firearm 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted February 9, 2022 Report Posted February 9, 2022 Nice example, but no measurements and the photos do not do it justice. Impossible to judge only from those. Missing its pan cover hinge pin. (Definitely worth more than they are suggesting.) Quote
Kiipu Posted February 9, 2022 Author Report Posted February 9, 2022 I cross-referenced the post and hopefully more information will be forthcoming. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted February 10, 2022 Report Posted February 10, 2022 Forgot to mention that it looks to be pre mid-1800s at least. If there’s a Mei signature under the barrel that could give us more information. Quote
Kiipu Posted April 26, 2022 Author Report Posted April 26, 2022 Maybe someone can clue us lesser mortals in on what the heck this thing is. Thought some of you might appreciate this Quote
MarcoUdin Posted April 26, 2022 Report Posted April 26, 2022 That video was already posted here last week. https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/39504-pocket-cannon/#comment-409505 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 26, 2022 Report Posted April 26, 2022 There’s a story quoted in Jan’s Yonezawa book of how the 進駐軍 Shinchūgun or occupying forces after WWII came around the towns and villages confiscating weapons of all sorts. In Yonezawa some quick-thinking souls used the barrels to make fence posts, and in this way many old examples were saved. 2 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted August 10, 2022 Report Posted August 10, 2022 Unusual conversion to a Chõshū smallbore long gun. 2 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted August 12, 2022 Report Posted August 12, 2022 Re English usage above. Maybe that should have been “conversion performed on (or) done to…” or “conversion on/of…” (?) Quote
Kiipu Posted August 13, 2022 Author Report Posted August 13, 2022 Piers, I always use the existing thread title in case something goes wrong with the link. Since I am here and I am making a pest of myself, I might as well add another link! You just got to like these pictures? Small Table Displays at Gun Shows, Post #4 3 Quote
Kiipu Posted February 28, 2023 Author Report Posted February 28, 2023 I count about three matchlocks for Piers to drool over and also some tsuba for @Spartancrest to ponder. Japanese/Oriental items at the Christchurch NZ Museum Several matchlocks depicted in this thread. Japanese Matchlock 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted March 1, 2023 Report Posted March 1, 2023 Thanks Thomas, there is a rain dragon tsuba in that collection that brings me up to 102 of those! I will have to have a look at the museum's site for a clearer image. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted March 1, 2023 Report Posted March 1, 2023 Haha, thanks for the finds! The various guns look nice but hard to see from those museum angles. The little one on the other hand is... how can I put it politely? ... made more recently, in order to look old and funky(?) 1 1 Quote
Kiipu Posted March 14, 2023 Author Report Posted March 14, 2023 Some more eyecandy for Piers. However, the lack of an overall picture of the matchlock is disappointing. This one got registered in 1872. Japanese Matchlock, pictures added- please help with identification and translation Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted March 14, 2023 Report Posted March 14, 2023 State of the photographic art in 2010! Yes, like looking through a glass darkly, and with none of the promised follow-up photos. The gun looks good and solid from what we can see. No mekugi-ana surrounds is not a problem. Thanks! (Member 'Trenchwarfare' has an example there of a Satsuma gun on his rack that I'd like to see close up.) 1 Quote
