Ray Singer Posted February 6, 2022 Report Posted February 6, 2022 Having found a very interesting katana at an antique show this past weekend led me to this article below on the smith by Markus. It's pretty wonderful to be able to learn so much about a swordsmith's life and career, and greatly enrichens the experience of studying his work. https://markussesko.com/2013/05/13/from-the-life-of-fujieda-taro-teruyoshi/ 7 1 Quote
Surfson Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 That's an interesting sword Ray. It was made after 1861 (I don't know the numerical value of the kanji used), so it is interesting to me that it has what look like two separate sword strikes, suggesting that it was put to use in battle. I wonder if it was used in one of the uprisings such as the Boshin war or Satsuma rebellion. Quote
Surfson Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 Just realized the kanji is gen/gan, meaning the first year, so it was made in 1861. Quote
Utopianarian Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 Ray, very interesting especially the kirikomi on the mune of the blade. Good chance this was used in an uprising or rebellion like Robert stated. The kirikomi looks definitely like it’s been there for a long time with original polish. Fascinating. Thank you Quote
Ray Singer Posted February 7, 2022 Author Report Posted February 7, 2022 Indeed, it is interesting to think these kirikomi might have been from one of those two conflicts. This is a case where it is very clear that the damage is from a real sword strike (vs. dings to the mune which are described as kirikomi, but may have a more mundane origin). There are three kirikomi on the mune and several small hakobore on the edge as well, so it seems clear that this sword has been through a fight. As for the date, yes as said above this is Bunkyo gannen and the date coincides with the birth of his first child as documented in Markus article. 1 Quote
Utopianarian Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 Definitely would recommend leaving kirikomi intact as to speaking to history of blade 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted February 7, 2022 Author Report Posted February 7, 2022 An interesting example of kirikomi + hakobore related to a documented fight. http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~sumie99/katanainfight.html 1 Quote
Utopianarian Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 This is one of the most fascinating parts of nihonto to gaze upon a beautiful blade and wonder of the stories it could tell. Amazing to read a documented account of one!! 1 Quote
Kiipu Posted February 7, 2022 Report Posted February 7, 2022 Wow! Thanks for sharing. 文久元年二月日 = A Day in February 1861. 1 Quote
Stephen Posted February 8, 2022 Report Posted February 8, 2022 Oh to have a antique show where a bunch of retirees live. This isn't the only one Ray found in an antique Fair. 1 Quote

Kiipu Posted February 11, 2022 Report Posted February 11, 2022 The clothing and uniforms are indeed Chinese. Attention @BANGBANGSAN 1 1 Quote
BANGBANGSAN Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 Yes, the photos should be an execution taken around early 1900 in China. The executioner use this kind of Dao。 Quote
Utopianarian Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 Yes Bangbangsan, I guess things got a little crazy over there in those days Quote
Brian Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 George, I removed those last 2 posts. While historical, I don't think they add value to the thread beyond shocking people, and I think would likely offend most. Quote
Utopianarian Posted February 12, 2022 Report Posted February 12, 2022 You are right Brian. I think this strayed a little bit off subject of the intended thread lol 😵🗡 Quote
