DTM72 Posted January 21, 2022 Report Posted January 21, 2022 WWII Type 3 RS (Rinji Sheniki) katana. 25 3/4" (65.4cm) nagasa. Width at habaki is 1 3/16" (30.1mm) width at yokote is 7/8" (22.2mm). The nakago is rare in that it is in rough forged condition and unsigned. There are still hammer marks visible on the nakago. There is a tight wari in the nakago above the mekugi-ana. The blade is in good polish with a suguha hamon. Nioi-guchi is visible all the way into the kissaki. Even though the nakago has signs of forging, I cannot say I see hada in the ji or the shinogi. The saya has some light scratches, but no dents at all. The tsuba is tight and the tsuka has no damage at all with the lacquer paint in great condition. Overall I would give this a 7 out of 10 for overall condition. $1350 shipped in the USA. Oversea shipping is available, for additional fees. Prefer payment via PayPal or Venmo, using friends and family.
DTM72 Posted January 21, 2022 Author Report Posted January 21, 2022 All 3 katana and the 1 Naval Wakizashi are for sale. I have also have 3 tanto and 1 wakizashi available, just not listed yet. Message for more details.
DTM72 Posted January 24, 2022 Author Report Posted January 24, 2022 NCO and Naval Kai-gunto are sold. Type 98 and Type 3 RS are still available.
Kolekt-To Posted February 2, 2022 Report Posted February 2, 2022 Does the RS have a cupped seppa? And, I assume that the blades on both the RS and the Type 98 are showato, not gendaito. Also, more photos of the Type 98 would be appreciated. Thanks!

The nakago on the Type 3 is interesting in that it looks to be roughly forged leading on to believe it could be a hand forged balde. Since I cannot see any hada, I will lean on the safe side and say that it is a Showato. I also believe the Type 98 to be a Showato as well. I'll post pics of the 98 below. Note the rare sharkskin was used instead of rayskin under the ito.
Kolekt-To Posted February 4, 2022 Report Posted February 4, 2022 Are both swords Mumei? I didn't see a photo of the RS's nakago, and the 98's nakago has plenty of file marks, but I didn't see any kanji or stamps. Both swords look to be in decent condition - I didn't see any serious chips or broken tips (some scratches, probably from cutting, but that's quite common). They both look like good examples of showato. The fact that the RS has lacquered ito on the the tsuka is also a plus. The price is $1350.00 for the RS. What is the price for the Type 98?
DTM72 Posted February 4, 2022 Author Report Posted February 4, 2022 The 98 is mumei with no stamps. Very nice yasurime file marks. Looks to be a very slight machi-okuri and the second mekugi-ana added. May be indicative of a Taisho blade or earlier Showa blade that was re-mounted. Not 100% sure on that one. Asking $1100 on the 98. The Type 3 RS has an unsusal rough finished nakago. There are still hammer marks and what looks to be a forging lap just above the mekugi-ana. May be indicative of a gendaito blade, but I honestly cannot see any hada...unless it is just a very fine hada like nashiji that I'm just not seeing. Pics of the nakago for the Type 3 are below.
