jelda44 Posted January 14, 2022 Report Posted January 14, 2022 Hello friends, please advice about my menpo. Myochin family is written in the book where it is published. However, the signature does not look like Myochin. What do you think ? Thank you in advance for your feedback Jiri Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 14, 2022 Report Posted January 14, 2022 Well if you read right to left it’s 友長 Tomonaga, but left to right would be 長友Nagatomo. There was a Myōchin line Tomonaga with those characters 友長 in Sendai at the end of the Edo Period 4 1 Quote
uwe Posted January 14, 2022 Report Posted January 14, 2022 Another example of that smith's work... 3 Quote
Iekatsu Posted January 14, 2022 Report Posted January 14, 2022 Looks like the same workmanship to me, both nice pieces. Tomonaga's affiliation with the Myochin can not be confirmed though. 2 1 Quote
uwe Posted January 15, 2022 Report Posted January 15, 2022 That’s true Thomas! The fact that he didn’t sign with that name (at the latter Edo period) may be an indicator that this affiliation is fictitious…. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 15, 2022 Report Posted January 15, 2022 Something I’ve just noticed is that by running the two characters together it does give an impression of 越 Etsu, as in Echizen越前、Etchū 越中 and 越後 Etchigo. 1 Quote
Luc T Posted January 15, 2022 Report Posted January 15, 2022 The style of the mei isn’t Myochin at all. Some Echizen smiths signed on a similar way 3 Quote
