Shuriken Posted January 3, 2022 Report Posted January 3, 2022 No usual ray skin, looks like another layer of cord. Apologies if there is a term for this; looking to learn more about this and what I'm looking at. Thanks! Quote
SteveM Posted January 4, 2022 Report Posted January 4, 2022 I've never seen this before. Doesn't look like a very orthodox wrapping job. I looked around for other examples of this type of wrapping to see if I could find any terminology on it, but couldn't find anything. Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 4, 2022 Report Posted January 4, 2022 It seems that whomever did the last tsukito lacked same and made do. I know gunto wrapped over celluloid because of shortage, so, maybe the reason for this, eh? John Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 5, 2022 Report Posted January 5, 2022 Is there anything under the first layer of wrap? I believe some tsuka had special paper as a replacement to ray skin, I presume a form of oil paper? David was there a tsuba with that mounting? Quote
mecox Posted January 5, 2022 Report Posted January 5, 2022 David, dont know what the blue ito is, but at kashira looks to be Japanese paper under it. However, the yellow ito looks like an amateur Western job, as the ito crossovers are all the same way (dont alternate left, right, left etc). Did this have menuki? 1 Quote
Shuriken Posted January 5, 2022 Author Report Posted January 5, 2022 @Spartancrest and @mecox It come like this; no tsuba or menuki. Kissaki is damaged too, has questionable tachi mei. I like oddballs, so was curious about this one. Quote
Spartancrest Posted January 6, 2022 Report Posted January 6, 2022 David, I like the oddball as well - sometimes it is like a lucky dip - I think you can find all sorts of replacement pieces for your Koshirae. You may need to talk with some of the blade experts but there are options with redefining the Kissaki. [Ko, or Ikubi ?] Quote
