Thanks everyone for their support and interest so far with the Plimpton collection. I want to share another batch with the forum.

Here are details on the second batch (sample excerpts also included below):

11.    Rare Type 32 Cavalry Kyu Gunto – this one features a unique plated tsuka with checkered backstrap and more interestingly the owner’s name ‘Hirai’ on the inside of the knuckle bow. Also interesting, the sword is signed Nihon Tokushuko Goshi Kaisha (Japan Special Steel Limited Partnership Company) and Motte Fushuko saku kore (made with anti rust steel)  $4,500. Pictures here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/f5qnsig6qq4dwu5/AADSwxeoxJw2cHuadYu5yfy0a?dl=0

12.    Rare early Type 8 field grade parade saber – very rare early example ca. 1875, features full backstrap decoration indicating it is field officer grade and shows kanji on the pommel. More interesting is that the blade was made in Germany by Clemen & Jung, Solingen; don’t see these too often 😊  – $1,500. Pictures here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cnplsehqnswb00b/AAATg8zwAp48Gk9qz3YfxRB4a?dl=0

13.    Police civil defense Manchukuo crossover – katana length civil defense sword, it shows light remnants of Manchukuo markings suggesting it was re-purposed for use on the home islands - $1,200. Pictures here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kzg49ouw8iruun6/AAA6lVvbs_JjSHW6q9kk5386a?dl=0

14.    Skull mon parade saber – yes, it’s just a parade saber but this one features a rare skull mon on the backstrap, possibly indicating use by the ‘Skull Regiment’ operating in 1930’s Manchuria - $2,000. Pictures here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/oq9wgd433b50865/AACPtw6zPu70s6wlbNJ0KC-1a?dl=0

15.    Early Meiji era naval sword – the early naval swords from the collection are some of the most fascinating to me given they represent such a transitional timeframe for the Japanese military where they borrow heavily from Western designs and suppliers. This one is likely one-of-a-kind and very early, ca. 1873, likely made in Britain per Plimpton but featuring Japanese style adornments like the ropes on the leather saya seen in many later variants and the Japanese proof markings - $3,500. 16.    Type 6 Meiji era Marine sword – another one-of-a-kind early Japanese naval related sword, this one is for Marines responsible for coastal artillery, dating to early 1870’s. This one features a nihonto wakizashi - $3,000. Pictures here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/rtlfrsyu6s444pd/AAARbDiHL0vKa4L0LcLevcNSa?dl=0

17.    Police Inspector Flag Sword – interesting and unique parade saber style sword but featuring a baton with a flag attached to it and markings for a police inspector. To my knowledge, very rare - SOLD. Pictures here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/y96iwx91khl6shp/AAC7phx3OhtqkL5b4sdunjmVa?dl=0

18.    Type 19 Kyu Gunto wakizashi – very clean example of the standard kyu gunto with a nihonto wakizashi in it. The blade is very clean and shows excellent workmanship, truncated mei shows ‘Echi’ only - SOLD. Pictures here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/qc6pjwudnpm1yom/AAA_2Y3XSYaBUmUlr6qPl84Qa?dl=0

Matt,

This is a fabulous example!  Although his name is not on the blade, the smith's kakihan (kao) is Morimichi.  I have a few of his blades on file, one made in the same year, 1934, in Type 94 fittings.  Best wishes on the sale.

Bruce,

Thanks for sharing the extra information on the swordsmith. Please feel free to add the pictures of this sword to your database. I hope it helps with additional research in the future, both with the swordsmith, the company, and these kind of mounts. Feel free to make an offer too if it might look good in your own collection! :)
