kyushukairu Posted November 29, 2021 Report Posted November 29, 2021 This small (61 x 48mm), but weighty shibuichi tsuba is almost certainly Mito tradition, and very likely Uchikoshi school. It displays the usual elevated appearance below the seppadai, textured carving on the left hand side and bottom of the tsuba, and menuki-like subject in the right-hand corner, as seen in Uchikoshi work. The theme is of Osho sennin watching an umbrella descending from heaven with a scroll attached. According to Henri Joly in Legend in Japanese Art, ‘Osho was the disciple of the great fairy, Choyo-Soshi, later, he retired alone to Mount Tesa. As Choyo was travelling in Ryusen, her umbrella served her to send a letter to Osho, by throwing it through the sky the distance of some two hundred Chinese Li, between Ryusen and Sasen.’ Box not included. £275
