I'm  going to show my Type 95 ignorance, here, along with my horrid computer skills, but would it have been possible the Plimpton saya HAS the horseshoe jiri, but the paint-job simply put the green paint straight across?

There is no doubt this is a fine example and saying it is near mint does not cheapen the definition at all. If a collector had to have just one NCO in their collection, this one would be very difficult to upgrade.

I don't think so, Bruce. The horse shoe goes to about 700. This is outside the range and the plug is too thick to have the curve of the horseshoe.

The near cousin to 871 can be seen via the thread below.  It is serial number 812 and is remarkably similar in all details.
