An exceptionally well detailed set of fuchigashira signed ‘Hosono Sōzaemon Masamori’ (細野惣左衛門政守)

This is a textbook example of Masamori’s work, shakudo done in ke-bori and iro-e and depicting daily life in Kyoto.

In the Edo period, Kyoto was divided in east and west, one of which housed the capital and was the centre of civic life, whilst the other was a marshland inhabited by peasants. We can see these two aspects depicted on the fuchi and kashira respectively. One of the most impressive details is the minuscule boat carrying five people on the fuchi. I have owned and viewed quite a few pieces by Masamori and this is the finest set I’ve encountered, both in terms of detail and quality. As the carving is very fine it is difficult to photograph, but I would be happy to provide a video for anyone who is genuinely interested. Another nice feature, which shows how much a previous owner appreciated this set is that the shitodome are made from solid gold (they were tested by the dealer whom I purchased the set from). They also come in a custom box with matching pillow.
