James Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 Hi all I have this sword that I will be putting onto eBay soon but I was wondering if anyone knows why it may have gold samekawa. The koshirae/tosogu are all antique and very nice so I don't think this would have been done recently. Just curious as I have never seen or even heard of such a thing. Quote
stekemest Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 First thing that came to my mind is that it was gilded for the tourist trade, as the usage of much gold is rather unusual in Japanese art. But that's just a guess. I haven't ever heard of gold same before either. Quote
Markus Posted February 16, 2009 Report Posted February 16, 2009 Hi James, I haven´t heard of a gilded same but there was - although not that often - a kind of "artificial" same for decorative purposes which was made of gilded copper (or even made of pure gold or silver). This kind of "same" is called "uchizame" (打ち鮫) or "uchidashi-zame" (打出し鮫) because the metal plate is embossed (uchi-ide, 打出). Quote
